I live within 20 miles of where this happened. at certain times of the year you can go to the landing near where this happened and you can hear the ship coming down the river. The al of a sudden you can hear people screaming and you can the fire coming down the river. It only lasts a few minutes. If the weather is the same that it was the night o March 1, 1858 foggy and little on the cold side you can really hear it and see it and even hear the people as they are jumping in the river. The reports of this has still been happening just in the last few years. While the landing in no longer in use to the public you can still go down the road and go to the river abnk and walk up the river and wait for it. It is amazing to hear and see

Mrs. Geary, Noticed you are tracing geneology of the Little family in Alabama. I found information pertaining to Eliza Battle Little. The "ELIZA BATTLE" was a steamboat named after Eliza Little. I believe I read her Father was CPT. The ELIZA BATTLE sank in the Tombigbee River in CHOCTAW County Alabama on the night of MAR 1 1858. She is now refered to the ghost ship of the Tombigbee mentioned in the book 13 ghosts of Alabama and Jeoffrey. You may already have this info but I came across the story of THE ELIZA BATTLE by typing in ELIZA BATTLE and became engrossed in the story and then came across your site. Hope this helps in some way.
